Entire Indian spiritual knowledge is based on three energies – Surya, Chandra and agni.
Vedas are Apaurusheyas.
Vidya or knowledge is of two types – Para vidya, Apara vidya.
Para vidya – the knowledge of Nature as told by Nature. This is apaurusheya. It is as a result of descent.
Apara vidya – the knowledge that is communicated by man through the medium of language.
But we are so entangled with language that we do not try to understand what Nature is telling about itself. The first sukta of Rig veda talks about Agni. There is mention of 3 types of agni – agni, surya and Chandra.
- Generates heat. Heat also symbolizes enthusiasm. Today, that heat or enthusiasm is lacking in people. There is no enthusiasm for anything.
- Agni always moves in upward direction. We should always live for lofty and noble ideals. Even when the flame is obstructed, it tries to move up. Similarly, when faced with obstacles in life, we should not swerve from the path of ideals
- Agni always transforms anything that comes in its contact like itself. Even iron when thrown in a blast furnace becomes red-hot.
Yagna has been developed keeping these characteristics of agni in mind. Navel or solar plexus is the seat of agni in our body. It exists as Jataragni.
Sun is described as the right eye of Virat Purusha. This is also called Pingala Nadi. If we know how to use pingala nadi, we can use the physical sun. Ashwamedha yagnas are being conducted to disseminate this knowledge of Sun, Moon and Agni.
If we understand our breath through the right nostril (pingala), we will know Surya vidya.
If we understand our Manipuraka chakra, we will know agni vidya
If we understand our breath through the left nostril (Ida), we will know chandra vidya.
This together is called Trayee vidya.
The first 8 letters of Gayatri mantra describes Surya vidya – tat savituur varenyam.. Our life should become as luminous as that of the Sun. Three qualities to learn from Sun are given below. A surya upasaka should definitely have these qualities in him.
- 1. Punctuality – Sun rises regularly irrespective of anything. We should imbibe this in our life and use our time efficiently.
- 2. Regularity
- 3. Understanding the specific quality of the sun when he stays in one rashi for one whole month. This is the concept of Dwadasha Adityas
Similarly there are three types of agni
- 1. Pavaka
- 2. Pavamana
- 3. Shuchi
Present civilization is using only pavaka agni. It removes the impurities and extracts pure form. Entire metallurgy is developed based on pavaka agni. Pavamana agni is called surya Shakti. There are some materials which become ‘ekoham bahusyamah’ when the sun rays fall on it. Example is seed. When we sow a seed and nourish it with water and sunlight, it transforms into a tree which gives many seeds. This process continues. In 1786, a person went to a book shop by name ‘Esoteric Book shop’ in some corner of London. He saw a book named ‘The secret science of solar rays’. I am looking if I can get that book. But don’t concentrate on that. Let’s focus on the actual knowledge. Anyone who wants to ascend the pedestal of Guru should understand this science of multiplicity or the Pavamana aspect of agni. We see this in Christ, in Shirdi Sai or any other master.
Doing penance under a tree helps in contemplating on this aspect of multiplicity in nature.
Vivekananda went to a scientist/Botanist by name Luther Burbank (from the book ‘Memoirs of Vivekananda’). He presented a Rose to Vivekananda. Together, they went to see the rose plant. Vivekananda praised the beauty of the plant but failed to notice that it was devoid of thorns. Once Burbank brought it to his notice, Swamiji asked how he could achieve this feat. Burbank narrated thus – “Every day, when I watered this plant, I sowed a thought in the plant. I would say that nobody would pluck a flower without the permission of the plant. There is no reason for fear. So there is no need for thorns to protect yourself (plant). When I continuously spoke to the plant in these words, slowly the size of thorns diminished and eventually vanished.
Also read ‘Psychic discoveries behind the Iron curtain’ to understand how you can communicate thoughts with plants Worshipping trees has been an integral part of our Indian culture.
Hanuman is called Pavamana sutha because he has totally understood and digested the Surya vignan. This has been conveyed through the metaphorical story of him swallowing the Sun.
